Scientific Workshop Series -Workshop on Classification of Iranian Rice Varieties
Genetic diversity is mainly measured based on the morphological differences of quantitative important traits. However, this method has some disadvantages in terms of time, space, and labor cost. In addition, this method cannot define the exact level of genetic diversity among the germplasms, because of the additive gene action on the expression of the traits (economically important traits), thus making environmental factors mask their true phenotypic performance.
The use of molecular markers is the chromosomal landmark through which an organism can be recognized and has gained popularity as a genetic diversity tool. Among the PCR-based markers, the SSR markers have proved to be very effective tools in the study of genetic diversity and organism relationships due to their high polymorphic nature and transferability. In recent years, microsatellite markers have been widely used to screen, characterize, and evaluate genetic diversity in many crop species. For marker-assisted selection as well as gene tagging, rice microsatellites had shown their utility. The SSR markers can be effectively applied for developing unique DNA profiles of rice genotypes because of having a high level of polymorphism and greater information. The statistical analysis has been used to measure the mutual relationships between various characters and yield improvement.
“Classification of Iranian Rice Varieties” online webinar workshop conducted on June 29, 2021, in the Rice Research Institute of Iran (RRII), Rasht, Iran. In this workshop, more than 120 of the Supervisory experts of the Food and Drug Administration of Medical Universities across the country, the experts of rice sectors, and academic members of Rice Research Institute of Iran were attended.
The speaker of this workshop was Dr. Ebadi, Assistant Professor of the Plant Breeding Department of the Rice Research Institute of Iran.
In this workshop participants were introduced to various types of markers engaged in the rice cultivars’ classification, different types of molecular markers, use of microsatellite markers, a brief discussion in the method of using microsatellite markers, classification of cultivars, analysis of molecular data with different software, and classification of Iranian rice cultivars using microsatellite markers
