”Challenges and New Strategies to Manage Invasive Apple Snails in Rice Agriculture: Lessons from the Invaded Countries ” conducted 26 May 2021, in the Rice Research Institute of Iran (RRII), Rasht, Iran. In this workshop, plant protection experts of rice across the country, the academic members of the plant protection department of RRII, and some invited guests from other related research institutes participated. The speaker of this workshop was Ravindra Chandra Joshi, Senior Consultant, Philippine Rice Research Institute, Department of Agriculture, Philippines & Associate, Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International – Southeast & East Asia Regional Centre, Malaysia
In this workshop participants were introduced to provide insights into the current status of the freshwater invasive apple snails (Pomacea spp.) in the ASEAN countries and other parts of the world. The effects of changing climate on Pomacea spp. new invasions expanded distribution, and negative impacts on the loss of biodiversity in wetland rice and native ecosystems, extensive economic damage to irrigated rice and human health, and triggering pesticide misuse and abuse during their management discussed. New strategies to manage them in rice agriculture using “ecology-based” sustainable management options also discussed. The presentation ended with the brief launch of the latest book on invasive apple snails, and also explore the future collaboration with the researchers from the Rice Research Institute of Iran, as well as other institutions in Iran.

As a Consultant on invasive species and senior adviser on invasive apple snails, CABI UK hired me to review the Evidence note on invasive apple snails and to provide a concise digest of technical information that NPPOs (and other stakeholders) in Kenya and East Africa could use to enhance knowledge of the species and develop contingency and/or response plans. This document is now published as CABI Working Paper 21, with due acknowledgments that read as follows: “The authors would like to acknowledge the contributions of Dr. Ravindra C. Joshi, Senior Consultant, Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), Department of Agriculture, Philippines and Associate, CABI-SEA, Malaysia for reviewing the paper and sharing his expertise on invasive apple snails.” Please share the link/paper on invasive apple snails with your colleagues.
