Title: Selection of segregating rice genotypes under environmental stresses using participatory variety selection

Abstract: Rice breeding through pedigree technique is one of the conventional approaches for introducing new varieties. Breeding for early-maturity of high cooking quality varieties was initiated at Rice Research Institute of Iran-Mazandaran Brach several years ago. The current study was performed for the evaluation and selection of segregating rice genotypes in various abiotic stress conditions. Breeding lines in F3 and F4 generations were evaluated in Amol for normal and drought stress conditions, Savadkoh-Shomali for cold, and Juibar for salt stress during 2016-2018. Finally, 32 selected pure lines were evaluated in a replicated experimental design and compared with control varieties. Keshvari, a high-yielding improved control variety, ranked first for yield and 15 pure breeding lines along with two controls, Tarom-Hashemi and Shiroodi were placed in second class. The best parental combination was CT16658/Tarom-Mahali and Tarom-Hashemi/Kohsar for the highest yield in Amol and Savadkoh-Shomali and Tarom-Hashemi/Kohsar, and Tarom-Mahali/Kohsar for salt stress condition. Phenotypic acceptability of the selected lines was scored by the experts and farmers in harvesting time and 21 lines ranked 1 or 3, which can be further evaluated in future studies.
