Title: Study of ratooning ability and stem cutting height in some Iranian rice landraces
Author: Seyed Sadegh Hosseini Emani
Abstract: In order to determine the ratooning ability and optimum stem cut height in some landraces under the similar condition of sowing and field management, the yield of 10 Iranian rice landrace cultivars such as 60-day Tarom, Sang Tarom, Tarom Samadi, Hashemi Babolsar, Hashemi Hoolar, Binam Moshkabad, Binam Babolsar, Rashti Eski Mahale, Hashemi Rishakdar Babol and Hashemi RRII were compared. The experiment was planned as Randomized Complete Block and spit plot designs (main plots were two stem cuttings and subplots were 10 landraces) for main and ratoon crops, respectively with four replications and plot area of 20 m2. The transplanting date was early May and the ratoon culture started after the main crop. The data was collected for all the traits including height, tiller number in a hill, panicle length, number of totals, filled and unfilled grain per panicle, 1000 grain weight, and economic yield. The results of statistical analysis showed that grain yield was significant (p≤0.05) under the effect of year and stem cutting height. Although all the cultivars belonged to local cultivars of Mazandaran province, however, they showed different ratooning abilities. Altogether, the cultivars of 60-day Tarom, Hashemi Babolsar, and Hashemi Hoolar showed higher ratooning ability due to having a higher tiller number, faster tillering, more 1000 grain weight, and higher growth vigor whereas, Binam Babolsar had less ratooning ability due to having lower values of the traits.
